Is it obligatory to advise a father who does not relieve himself in the restroom, listens to music, and watches movies?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

You must advise your father gently and kindly regarding the wrongdoings he commits, trying to guide him to the path of Allah.

Allah Almighty said: (But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness and follow the way of those who turn back to Me [in repentance]).

Choose the best methods and means for advice, such as gifting a tape or a booklet appropriate for the wrongdoing. Choose the right time, avoid advising publicly, and select kind words, as Abraham (peace be upon him) did with his father.

If he does not respond, you can seek help from his righteous friends or relatives, or coordinate with the Friday preacher. And supplicate for him abundantly in his absence.
