The text of Ibn Mas'ud's in Muslim clarifies that the creation of man is gathered in his mother's womb for forty days as a nutfa (sperm-drop), then he becomes an alaqa (clinging-clot) for a similar period, then a mudgha (chewed-lump) for a similar period. After that, an angel is sent to blow the soul into him, and is commanded to write four words: his sustenance, his lifespan, his deeds, and whether he will be wretched or felicitous. These four matters are written for every human being before his birth.
