What is the ruling on ornamented, jeweled, colorful, and patterned covers for Mus-hafs, and may a menstruating woman touch them?
It is permissible to make covers for the , decorate them, and clean them. There is no harm for a menstruating woman to touch them if the Mushaf is not inside them.
However, if the Mushaf is inside them: - The Malikis and Shafi'is prohibited touching them. - Some Hanafis permitted touching the binding of the Mushaf and its blank spaces for one who is in a state of major ritual impurity. - The Hanbalis and those who agreed with them permitted touching and carrying the Mushaf with its cover or sleeve, because it is not considered directly touching it.
The jurists differed on touching the Mushaf with an interposing object (hail). The Malikis and Shafi'is absolutely prohibited it, while the Hanbalis and Hanafis permitted it if the interposing object was separate.
