What is the ruling on conversing with a woman about ordinary life matters outside the scope of work, while adhering to Islamic manners, and what are the boundaries of what is unlawful in that?

It is permissible for a man and a woman to converse when there is a need, and the voice of a woman is not considered 'awrah (something that must be concealed), but it is forbidden for her to soften or thin it in a way that incites temptation (fitnah). Her speech must be firm, to prevent hearts from becoming attached due to any perceived softness. As for speaking without need, it is forbidden, because it may lead to temptation and falling into the prohibited, and Islamic law blocks the means to the forbidden. The first boundary of the forbidden in speech is the beginning of conversation that is unnecessary and not required by work.
