Is it permissible for a wife to disobey her husband who is negligent in prayer and to disregard his permission?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the husband's shortcomings in prayer do not amount to denying its obligation or abandoning it entirely, then the wife must admonish him and argue with him in the best manner. However, if his shortcomings mean denying its obligation or abandoning it entirely, then the marital bond between them has been severed because he has become a disbeliever. This is the preponderant view, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The covenant between us and them is prayer; whoever abandons it has disbelieved," and his saying: "Between a servant and disbelief — or he said polytheism — there is nothing but the abandonment of prayer." Nevertheless, the wife is not permitted to disobey her husband regarding marital rights as long as the legitimate bond between them remains intact.
