How exactly does one pray the 'Ishā' supererogatory prayer (nafilah)?

The supererogatory (nafilah) prayer related to the 'Isha obligatory prayer is the regular Sunnah of 'Isha, which consists of two rak'ahs after the 'Isha prayer. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, consistently performed it. As for before the 'Isha adhan, no specific number of supererogatory prayers has been established, and the matter is broad. It is desirable to perform many supererogatory prayers due to the great good they contain. Some scholars have considered the supererogatory prayer between Maghrib and 'Isha as part of the night vigil (qiyam al-layl). It is also important to strive to perform as many supererogatory prayers as possible after the 'Isha prayer, especially in the last part of the night, for night vigil is from the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
