What is the ruling on getting dental braces if the lower jaw is small and the teeth in it are crowded and crooked, and the upper jaw protrudes, with the need to extract some teeth and smooth them after removing the braces?

It is permissible to straighten teeth if there is a need for it, such as if they are disfigured or if a person cannot eat without correcting them. However, if there is no need for it, then it is not permissible, because it is considered an alteration of Allah's creation. Similarly, it is permissible to extract an extra tooth because it mars the appearance. However, it is not permissible to create gaps between teeth (tafleej) or to file them (washr).
