What is the ruling on stepping in front of people praying, whether one knows the ruling or is ignorant of it?

If a Muslim prays towards a sutrah, it is permissible to pass behind it. If he prays without a sutrah, it is permissible to pass at a distance from him. The determining factor for this distance is custom, or, according to some, the place of prostration. As for passing directly in front of the worshipper, or between him and his sutrah, at close proximity, it is not permissible. This is based on the hadith: "If the one who passes in front of a worshipper knew what was upon him, standing for forty would be better for him than passing in front of him." This indicates that passing in front of a worshipper is a grave sin. If someone attempts to pass in front of a worshipper, the worshipper should push him away; if he refuses, the worshipper should fight him, because one who does that is like Satan. This ruling applies to one who knows of the prohibition. As for one who is ignorant of the ruling, he is excused.
