Is it permissible to give Zakat al-Mal to mosques in the country where I work?
Allah has restricted the deserving recipients of Zakat to the eight categories mentioned in the verse from Surat At-Tawbah: "Indeed, [ prescribed ] charitable donations are only to be given to the poor and the needy, and to those who work on [ collecting ] them, and to those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to [ free ] those in bondage, and to the debtors, and for the cause of Allah, and to the wayfarer." Building mosques and hospitals does not fall under this, because the preponderant opinion is that "for the cause of Allah" refers to Jihad.
