Is it permissible to commit adultery to avoid being killed?

Adultery is a grave sin forbidden by Allah. However, if one is coerced into it under threat of death, there is no sin upon them, nor is there any prescribed punishment (hadd), based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Indeed, Allah has forgiven my Ummah for their mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they are coerced into." Sin is lifted if the coercer is an oppressive person of authority and the coerced finds no means of escape, as obligation only applies to what is within one's capacity. Many scholars have qualified this by stating that the woman subjected to adultery must not be married. It has also been said that coercion into adultery is not considered valid because the act of penetration implies that one was not coerced. Regarding a man who commits adultery under coercion, there are two opinions, depending on whether coercion prevents erection or not.
