Is expiation (kaffarah) obligatory for previously missed Ramadan fasts due to ignorance of the ruling regarding the connection of brownish discharge (kudrah) to menstruation and considering it part of menses, which led to believing in ritual purity (tahara) and performing ghusl after the cessation of blood while the brownish discharge (kudrah) remained, thereby shortening the actual period of menstruation?

Some scholars, such as Ibn Taymiyyah, are of the view that a brownish discharge (kudra) is not menses at all. Although this view is less preferred by us, many scholars have permitted acting upon it after the fact, when it is difficult to rectify the situation.

The most cautious and duty-absolving approach is for the questioner to make up the days she fasted while menstruating. She is not required to offer expiation (kaffarah) due to her ignorance of the obligation to make up the fasts.
