Blood that precedes the menstrual period is considered menstruation if it appears 15 days after the cessation of the previous blood. However, if it appears before 15 days, it is irregular bleeding (istihada), unless its appearance is repeated three times, in which case it is then considered menstruation, supplementary to the first blood, if the total of the two blood flows and the period of purity between them does not exceed 15 days. This period is then designated as the customary period. This is the view of the Hanbalis. If it is menstruation, a woman is not permitted to pray or fast. As for irregular bleeding, it does not prevent prayer or fasting.
