When does purity occur, and when is ghusl obligatory, knowing that menstruation lasts for 5 days, then on the sixth and seventh days, a brownish discharge (kudrah) and yellowish discharge (sufrah) appear, and on the eighth day, the white discharge (al-qassah al-bayda') appears? On the sixth and seventh days, dryness occurs two to five times for 1-3 hours, then the brownish discharge returns. Is this dryness sufficient for purity, or must the white discharge be awaited? And is what comes down after the dryness on the sixth day, which is very dark blood, considered menstruation, or does it have the ruling of brownish discharge? What is the duration of the menstrual period, is it 5 days, 6 days, or 8 days?

A woman recognizes purity by one of two signs: dryness (al-jufūf) or the white discharge (al-qaṣṣah al-bayḍā’). Whichever she sees first, she has become pure, and ritual bathing (ghusl) becomes obligatory upon her. Yellowish (ṣufrah) and brownish (kudrah) discharges that are connected to blood are considered menstruation (ḥayḍ), as well as if they occur during the habitual period. If the brownish discharge connected to blood ceases and the woman sees dryness, even for a short period, she must perform ghusl and pray. If she then sees brownish discharge after that, it is not considered menstruation as long as it is outside her habitual period. If this pattern continues, her habitual period becomes six days, which is the duration of the blood and any associated brownish discharge before dryness. Any brownish discharge after that is not considered menstruation as long as it is not connected to blood or not within the habitual period.
