What is the ruling on people gathering to recite the the Qur’an led by a sheikh after someone has passed away?

Many innovations have been introduced into the religion, among them the gathering of people to recite the Qur’an and supplicate for the deceased collectively. This has no basis. What is prescribed is to supplicate for the deceased and seek forgiveness for them, as stated in the Hadith: "Ask for forgiveness for your brother and ask for steadfastness for him, for he is now being questioned." As for reciting the Qur’an individually and dedicating its reward to the deceased, some scholars have permitted it, citing general evidence indicating that benefit reaches the deceased, and this is correct. However, this should be done without innovative rituals such as gathering or hiring a reciter.
