Must I maintain ties with my paternal and maternal uncles, whom I have never met or contacted, and who do not even know me?

Your lack of communication with your paternal or maternal uncle throughout your life is considered a blameworthy severance of kinship ties in Islamic law. Their not knowing you is not an excuse. Therefore, you must initiate contact with them, introduce yourself, and fulfill the duty of maintaining kinship ties.
