Is it permissible for me to perform Hajj with money I borrowed from the bank?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

There is no harm in performing Hajj with borrowed money if it is a good loan (qard hasan) free from usury (riba). However, if the loan is interest-based (ribawi), the borrower is sinful due to the presence of usury, and the contract is invalid; it must be canceled, and one must repent to Allah. Scholars have differed regarding one who performs Hajj with unlawfully acquired money. The majority of jurists hold that their Hajj is valid, though they are sinful. Imam Ahmad, however, said, "It is not sufficient (yujzi'uh)." In another narration from him, it is valid but forbidden.
