Lying is one of the major sins, prohibited by the Qur'an, , and scholarly consensus. It is only permissible if it serves a praiseworthy purpose that cannot be achieved otherwise. If a person fears envy by stating the truth, they may use equivocations (tawriyah) to avoid forbidden lying.
