A husband must treat his wife well and not use divorce as a means of threat. Swearing by divorce is disliked in Islamic law, and divorce occurs thereby according to the majority of scholars. Some scholars, like Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim, held that an expiation for an oath (kaffarat yamin) is due upon breaking it. This latter opinion may be adopted by students of Islamic knowledge or by a layperson who is given a fatwa to that effect by someone he trusts.
