The story of the Samiri and his misleading of the people of Moses into worshipping the calf is mentioned in books of exegesis and the Holy Quran. Its details are from the stories of the Children of Israel, which we treat with neither affirmation nor denial. The Samiri made the calf from gold and cast into it a handful of dust from the spot where Gabriel's horse had trod, whereupon it began to low, becoming a real calf. Moses then burned it and scattered its ashes in the sea. The calf is mentioned in the Holy Quran in several places, and the story is recounted in Surah Al-A'raf and Surah Taha.
