What is the way to sincere repentance (tawbah nasuḥ) and expiation for sins, and to stop repeating the disobedience after repenting from it?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Repentance is easily achieved by abandoning sins, being truthful with Allah, striving against one's self (mujahadah), and seeking assistance from Allah. Allah accepts the repentance of His servant as long as he turns to Him in repentance. Allah states: "And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons sins." And He says: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'"

To remain steadfast in repentance: maintain performance of the obligatory duties, increase voluntary acts of worship (nawafil), perform good deeds, keep company with the righteous, regularly attend remembrance circles (halaqat adh-dhikr), and frequently supplicate (dua).

Human weakness in the face of desires is overcome by striving against one's self and seeking assistance from Allah. Instead of wishing for punishment, ask Allah for well-being, concealment (of sins), and forgiveness.
