Is it permissible to rent an apartment to a non-Muslim foreigner who may commit sins such as drinking alcohol, and what is the expiation for one who rented out and received the rent while ignorant of the ruling?

It is permissible for a Muslim to rent out his dwelling to a disbeliever, as long as the latter does not use it for an unlawful act, such as selling intoxicants or idols, or engaging in fornication and drinking alcohol. This is understood from the permissibility of rental in principle, as the Sharia has not prohibited renting to disbelievers, even though we know they engage in matters that contradict the Sharia in their homes.
