Can a student of Fiqh dispense with Usul al-Fiqh?

If a student of knowledge wishes to become proficient in Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), he must combine it with Usul al-Fiqh (principles of Islamic jurisprudence). Fiqh can be understood without its principles, but Usul al-Fiqh cannot be understood without Fiqh. A jurist cannot do without Usul al-Fiqh, nor can a specialist in Usul al-Fiqh do without Fiqh if he desires it. Scholars have differed on whether a student of knowledge should begin with Usul al-Fiqh or Fiqh, and the more common and preferable approach is usually to start with Fiqh due to human need for it in their acts of worship and transactions.
