Was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the one who taught the Companions that faith increases and decreases?

Texts from the Quran and Sunnah indicate that faith (Iman) increases and decreases. This is a consensus among the Companions (Sahabah) and the majority of the early Muslims (Salaf). Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that the Companions and the majority of the Salaf held the view that faith increases and decreases, and that "Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Hadith" (People of the Sunnah and Hadith) believe that it varies in degree. Ibn Abi Al-Izz Al-Hanafi presented numerous Quranic verses that indicate the increase of faith, such as the Almighty’s saying: {And when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith} [Al-Anfal:2], and His saying: {He is the One Who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers that they might add faith to their [present] faith} [Al-Fath:4]. He also cited prophetic hadiths that describe the decrease of faith, and mentioned sayings of the Companions that affirm this meaning, such as the saying of Umar ibn Al-Khattab: "Come, let us increase in faith," and the supplication of Ibn Mas'ud: "O Allah, increase us in faith, certainty, and understanding." This indicates that the Companions learned this from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
