Does patience with dental pain, along with occasional neglect of cleaning, increase one's good deeds (hasanat)?
Every affliction that befalls a Muslim, if he bears it with patience and seeks Allah's reward, earns him merit or expiates a sin, in accordance with the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "No fatigue, nor illness, nor anxiety, nor grief, nor harm, nor sorrow befalls a Muslim, even a prick of a thorn, but Allah expiates some of his sins thereby." Seeking remedies and medical treatment does not contradict patience and seeking reward. Neglecting the use of miswak (tooth-stick) and not cleaning teeth contradicts the Sunnah and the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him), who said: "Were it not that I would overburden my Ummah, I would have ordered them to use the miswak with every prayer." The miswak purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord, and it is among the characteristics of the fitra (natural disposition).
