What is the ruling on playing backgammon, carrom, or chess?

Chess is disliked and considered a form of gambling by some Companions and Tabi'in. It was even prohibited by some of them. Ali described it as "idols," and Ibn Abbas burned the property of an orphan that contained chess pieces. As for backgammon (nard), playing it is forbidden according to the majority of scholars. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, described one who plays it as though he had dyed his hand with the blood of a pig. As for cards and carrom, they are forbidden if they involve a prohibited act such as gambling or distraction from prayer. Otherwise, they are disliked due to their lack of benefit.
