Which is more prioritized: paying the expiation for breaking the fast or paying off a debt to one's mother?

We understand that the questioner owes expiation for delaying a missed fast or feeding [the poor] due to a permanent excuse. Expiation is a right of Allah, and debt is a right of a human being. There are four cases for expiation alongside debt:

1. Expiation is due with flexibility (on time) and the debt is immediate (due): The debt must be paid first.

2. Expiation is due with flexibility (on time) and the debt is deferred: It is recommended to pay the debt before performing the expiation, though it is permissible to perform the expiation before paying the debt.

3. Expiation is due immediately and the debt is immediate (due): The debt takes precedence because the expiation has an alternative, and the rights of human beings are based on strict adherence.

4. Expiation is due immediately and the debt is deferred: The immediate expiation must be performed first. An immediate right takes precedence over others, whether it is a debt or an expiation.
