If the blood appears fifteen days after the previous period of purity, then it is menstruation (hayd) and all its associated rulings apply. If the blood appears before fifteen days from the previous period of purity, then it is dysfunctional bleeding (fasad) and irregular bleeding (istihadah), which does not prevent prayer, fasting, or intercourse. If the bleeding is intermittent during the customary period, then there is a difference of opinion on the matter. It is obligatory to make up the fasts that the woman observed during her menstrual period, because fasting at that time is neither permissible nor valid.
