What is the ruling on compelling children, male students, and female students to memorize the Quran, and is there a fear that this may cause them to become averse to the Quran?

Parents must raise their children in a way that benefits them in their religion and their worldly life. Memorizing the Quran is one of the greatest virtues, and it is a fard kifaya (communal obligation) upon Muslims. Some jurists have gone so far as to permit a father to compel his son to memorize the Quran, because memorizing it is a fard kifaya, and because the father is obligated to raise his children on what benefits them. He must choose the appropriate method for the boy's personality, using both encouragement and deterrents. It is permissible to teach the Quran to students in schools even if they do not wish it, because guardians are obligated to care for them and guide them towards what benefits them.
