Understanding the verse (He brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living) requires a clarification of the meaning of life and death. It is not correct to limit the meaning of life to living organisms in their modern conventional sense, because the Quran associates it with the revival of the earth after its death, and the earth is not a living organism.

So, bringing forth the living from the dead and the dead from the living includes bringing forth the growing body from the dry body (like a tree from a seed), and bringing forth the solid seed from the living body (like a seed from a tree). It also includes the transformation of inanimate objects (air, light, water, dust) into life (plants), and the transformation of a living organism into an inanimate object (the animal body into dust). This general meaning encompasses the splitting of seeds, the gradual progression of life, and the nourishment of living organisms from inanimate elements.
