Is playing considered gambling if only one of the players pays money to play, and the winner gets virtual money in the online game?

There is no harm in spending money for permissible games. The player's acquisition of virtual currency within the game does not affect this ruling, as what is considered is that the game itself be permissible and that no Sharia-prohibited outcome results from playing it.
