What is the ruling on speeding up the performance of prayer due to time constraints?
Whoever catches one unit (rak'ah) of the prayer before its time expires has caught the entire prayer, and it is considered performed on time according to the most correct opinion. Some scholars differentiate between two situations regarding hastening due to time constraints: 1. If the worshipper begins the prayer and there is enough time remaining for the entire prayer, it is permissible for him to prolong its recitation, glorifications (tasbihat), and the like, even if the time expires due to his prolongation. 2. If he begins the prayer and there is not enough time remaining for it, then it is not permissible for him to prolong it; rather, he must shorten it.
If the intention to hasten is due to the worshipper's time constraints because of being busy with something, then the prayer has pillars (arkaan) and obligations (wajibat) that must not be neglected, and it has recommended acts (sunan) that are desirable to perform but their omission does not cause harm.
