Is the intention to follow the successor obligatory?

If an Imam experiences an impediment that prevents him from continuing the prayer, it is preferable for the congregants to appoint one of the worshippers to complete the prayer with them. Regarding the condition of intending to follow the successor (al-mustakhlaf), there are two views: one is that it is not a condition, and the other is that it is a condition. However, if no successor is available, or if some individuals wish not to follow him, there is no harm in them completing their prayers individually. In this case, the one who completes his prayer alone does not need to intend to follow anyone.
