A Muslim must guard his tongue and avoid ambiguous words, as in the Hadith: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." It is unlikely that the speaker intended the technical (religious) meaning of the word "deen" (religion) here; rather, he might have meant one of its linguistic meanings.
