What is the ruling on a pregnant woman in her final months combining and shortening prayers?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A Muslim must perform the prayer at its legally prescribed time. The Sunnah permits combining two prayers for the sick person for whom it is difficult to perform each prayer at its designated time. This is the view of the Maliki and Hanbali schools. A pregnant woman takes the ruling of a sick person if it is difficult for her to perform the prayers, so it is permissible for her to combine the Dhuhr and Asr prayers, and the Maghrib and Isha prayers, without shortening them. As for shortening the prayers (qasr), it is only permissible for a traveler. If a pregnant woman is traveling, she may combine and shorten the prayers. If she is in her home country, she may only combine them without shortening. The reason for combining prayers is hardship, while the reason for shortening prayers is travel only.
