What is the ruling on the repentance of someone who insults Allah or His Messenger ﷺ, whether publicly or privately? Is their repentance accepted between them and Allah if the matter has not reached the authorities? What have scholars said regarding this? And what is the solution for someone afflicted with obsessive thoughts in these matters, who fears they may have fallen into them and believes there is no repentance for them?

Reviling the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is an act of disbelief that expels its perpetrator from the fold of Islam and necessitates their execution as a hadd (prescribed punishment). This is the view of the majority of scholars. If one repents with a sincere repentance, Allah will accept their repentance. However, according to some scholars, repentance does not waive the death penalty. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that some scholars hold that one who reviles the Prophet is to be executed and not asked to repent, while others accept their repentance unconditionally. A third group accepts the repentance of a disbeliever but not that of a Muslim. The same applies to one who reviles Allah the Almighty; they commit an act of disbelief and are to be executed. There is a difference of opinion regarding the acceptance of their repentance, with some scholars holding that they should be asked to repent and their repentance accepted. Sincere repentance is accepted by Allah if its conditions are met, for Allah forgives all sins. As for obsessive thoughts concerning these matters, they should be disregarded.
