It is recommended for a man who intends to propose to a woman to look at her before the proposal, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "If one of you proposes to a woman, and he is able to look at what would encourage him to marry her, let him do so." If he is unable to look, it is preferable for him to send a trustworthy woman to look at her and describe her to him. Scholars have differed regarding the extent of what is permissible to look at, with the majority holding that it is only the face and hands. Some say he may look at what is commonly apparent. This should be done without privacy, and it is permissible to repeat the looking to be sure.
