What is the ruling on renewing one's Islam when experiencing intrusive thoughts (waswasah) about mockery, and will Allah hold one accountable for that, and is it considered an innovation (bid‘ah)? And is it sufficient to condemn the mockery in one's heart when it occurs in a gathering?

You must strive against your soul to rid yourself of these whisperings (waswas) and to turn away from them, because you do not leave the fold of Islam merely by these whisperings or by hearing the words of mockers. A Muslim is not deemed an apostate unless he commits a saying, an action, or holds a belief that is definitively proven to be major disbelief (kufr akbar) that expels one from the religion, and all conditions for deeming one an apostate are met, and no impediments to it exist. When you hear evil, denounce it with your tongue; if you are unable, then denounce it with your heart and leave the place. Do not speak with people about these matters, as you are afflicted with whisperings.
