If an Imam experiences an invalidating event during prayer, he must withdraw and purify himself. It is recommended for him to appoint a successor to complete the prayer with the congregants.
If the Imam does not appoint a successor, the people pray individually or they put forward one of them to lead them in congregational prayer. Appointing a successor is a (recommended practice).
However, if the Imam continues praying while in a state of impurity or while having a removable defilement, he has disobeyed Allah. He must repeat the prayer for himself only after repenting.
As for the prayer of the congregants who were unaware of the Imam's invalidating event, their prayer is valid.
