Does merely feeling joy when the teacher praises you after reciting the Qur’an count as showing off, especially given that the praise was unexpected and its absence would not have an effect?

Your feeling of joy when your teacher praised you because she was impressed by your recitation is not showing off (riya'). Joy at praise is a natural human inclination. This type of joy is neither entirely blameworthy nor entirely praiseworthy.
