Are there foods that the Prophet (peace be upon him) recommended for the health of a pregnant woman and her fetus?
There is nothing in the authentic hadiths that recommends specific foods or drinks for pregnant or postpartum women from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Knowledge of such matters should be sought from specialists such as doctors and nutritionists. Weak and fabricated hadiths have been narrated concerning this topic.
It has been authentically reported from more than one of the Salaf that they recommended ripe dates (rutab) for postpartum women. It was narrated from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i that he said, "They used to prefer rutab for postpartum women," and Al-Rabi' ibn Khuthaym said, "I have no medicine for a postpartum woman like rutab."
Medical research has shown that rutab contains a substance that contracts the uterus, strengthens its muscles, aids in childbirth, and reduces bleeding. It also contains simple, easily digestible sugars, which are an important source of energy beneficial for uterine muscles.
