How authentic is the attributed saying: "Seek wealth in marriage"?
This narration, meaning that marriage brings wealth, was reported from some Companions like Ibn Abbas, Ibn Mas'ud, Abu Bakr, and Umar, in the interpretation of the verse: "If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty." As for the hadith: "Marry women, for they bring wealth," it is weak. And the hadith: "Marry the poor, and Allah will enrich you," has no basis. Allah has promised the poor person who marries wealth if he intends marriage as an act of obedience to Allah and to protect himself from the unlawful. This is supported by the hadith: "There are three whom Allah is duty-bound to help: the one who marries seeking chastity..."
