What is the Sharia ruling on a husband who admits to smoking hashish, lies to his family and wife, mistreats his wife by screaming at her, threatening her, and hitting her, and refuses to acknowledge his wrongdoing, while the wife cannot compromise her right to respect and dignity, and she is alone in a foreign land?

The spouses must live together amicably. The wife should obey her husband in what is right, and the husband should treat his wife well. He is permitted to discipline her in cases of insubordination through admonition, avoidance in bed, and a light, non-injurious beating.

If the wife sees her husband neglecting a religious duty or committing a forbidden act, she should advise him, enjoin him to what is good, and forbid him from what is evil with kindness. She should conceal his faults unless there is a stronger interest in informing certain people, or if the husband is openly committing the sin, in which case it is permissible to report him to someone who can deter him.

If the husband insists on smoking hashish, it is preferable for the wife to separate from him through divorce or khul' (dissolution of marriage initiated by the wife), unless the harm of divorce is greater than the harm of remaining married.

It is recommended that the spouses communicate and reach an understanding, that the wife apologizes for informing the husband's father, and that they agree to live together amicably. The husband should repent sincerely, abandon bad company, replace it with good company, and frequently attend religious lessons and remembrance circles, listening to admonitions. He should also frequently supplicate to Allah for guidance and righteousness.
