Is it obligatory to sell part of the gold owned by the parents, without their knowledge, to pay the zakat on gold that has not been paid for more than fifteen years, knowing that the parents refuse to pay it claiming it is jewelry for adornment, and that this delay has caused harm to them and their son?

The parents must offer sincere repentance to Allah and promptly pay the zakat (definition) on jewelry kept for adornment and saving. The children should remind and admonish them gently and respectfully with verses and hadiths regarding those who withhold zakat, explaining that sins are a cause of tribulation. The children bear no sin if the parents do not respond, for Allah says: "And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another." It is not permissible to take from the parents' money without their knowledge to pay zakat, because it is not valid unless intended by the owner of the money.
