Ibn Kathir, in his commentary on the verse "They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe," stated that the hypocrites, by feigning faith and concealing disbelief, imagine in their ignorance that they are deceiving Allah and that this will benefit them. He also noted that their actions harm no one but themselves, yet they are unaware. He advises the American who wishes to learn about Islam to be fair-minded and free from bias, to beware of its distortion by the enemies of Islam, and to learn it from its pure sources, keeping away from sects that have corrupted the call with their innovations, such as the Qadiyaniyyah, the Shi'a, and the Sufiyyah.
