Is it permissible to pay Zakat al-Mal to the Palestinian Intifada account?
The recipients of Zakat are eight, as mentioned by Allah Almighty in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 60. Among them is "fi sabilillah" (in the way of Allah), who are the ghuzat (those fighting for Allah's cause) and those stationed in ribat (guarding the frontiers). They are given what they spend in their fighting, whether they are rich or poor, according to the majority of scholars. However, the Shafi'is, Ahmad, Ishaq, and the majority of scholars believe that it is not permissible for a rich person if his wealth is with him during the fighting.
Our brothers in Palestine are Mujahideen in a land of ribat, and they fall under the categories of Zakat recipients, including the poor and the needy. They are more deserving of it than others. It is permissible to give Zakat to one category without the rest, and this is the view of the majority, contrary to the Shafi'is.
