It is permissible for a skilled dream interpreter to charge a fee for interpreting dreams, in return for the effort expended, not for definitively ascertaining their meaning. This is permissible by consensus, as mentioned in the book Majma' al-Anhur. The mere fact that the matter is based on conjecture does not prevent charging a fee, similar to a doctor charging a fee for treatment or an exorcist for incantations, because the fee is for the effort expended, not for the attainment of healing. The fee is determined by mutual agreement between the two parties. A Muslim should not undertake dream interpretation unless he is qualified to do so, and he should not be deluded by this knowledge that Allah has bestowed upon him.
