Which is better: much dhikr with absentmindedness, or dhikr slowly with devotion?
Reflecting on the Quran is better than reciting it excessively. This ruling also applies to other forms of dhikr (remembrance of God), because dhikr performed with presence of heart, humility, and contemplation is superior. Al-Ghazali explained that dhikr with presence of heart is effective and beneficial, while dhikr recited by the tongue only, with a heedless heart, is of little benefit. The priority, therefore, is to maintain presence of heart with Allah Almighty continuously or most of the time, as this ennobles all other acts of worship.
