What is the ruling on giving zakat to a divorced woman who has two children, whose father works but does not provide for her, and who lives with her family while her father is well-off and takes care of her?

Zakat has specific categories of recipients, which are mentioned in the verse [Al-Tawbah: 60]. If a divorced woman and her children are poor or needy—meaning they do not possess enough to cover their needs—then it is permissible to give them zakat, even if the woman is employed. Poverty (miskanah) is not inconsistent with work, as Allah Almighty mentioned in the story of the people of the ship. However, if the woman's work is sufficient for her and her children, then it is not permissible to give them zakat.
