Whoever vows to fast a specific month and breaks their fast during it, falls into one of two categories:

1. Breaking the fast without a valid excuse: First opinion: They must restart fasting the month from the beginning. Second opinion: They do not restart fasting unless they stipulated continuity. Rather, they make up for the days they missed after completing the month, and they must offer an expiation for breaking an oath (kaffarat yamin).

2. Breaking the fast due to a legitimate Shar'i excuse (such as illness or menstruation): They must make up for the days they missed after completing the month. Scholars have differed regarding the obligation of expiation for breaking an oath (kaffarat yamin); some deem it obligatory, while others do not. The days of Eid and Tashreeq do not break the continuity.
