The criterion for working with a specific group is not conformity with one's field of study, but rather professional competence. If, through your personal effort, you are able to qualify yourself to work with rural elderly individuals, then there is no blame upon you for remaining in that position. However, if you are unable to benefit them and perform what is required, and you lack the necessary knowledge and ability for this job, then you do not deserve the salary, and you must leave the job or request a transfer; for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When authority is given to those who are not fit for it, then await the Hour." For leadership is a trust and a responsibility that only the knowledgeable and sincere can fulfill.
